Toons Bar & Grill (Bar, Lakeview)

Location: Lakeview, 3857 N. Southport Ave
Phone: (773) 935-1919
Cuisine: American
Reservations: Not accepted.

Something about Toons feels like being on a pirate ship. No, there aren’t any eye-patched villains, and no, there aren’t parrots perched on the shoulders of swashbuckling renegades, but just in case you’re worried about scurvy Toons offers some excellent homemade pineapple-infused vodka. And it’s delicious.
If you’re looking for drinks with a slightly less medicinal purpose, the bar also features a nice selection of local brews (Goose Island, Three Floyd’s, etc) and nightly drink specials that’ll give you something to swallow while shooting pool or playing shuffleboard. The menu features typical bar grub (wings, onion rings) as well as excellent burgers and and po’ boys. Despite its accolades (the Chicago Tribune named Toons one of the top eleven places in Chicago to get wings) and the near legendary status of the Black & Blue burger (seasoned in Cajun spice and topped with blue cheese and fried onion strings), Toons doesn’t feel as crowded as most other bars in Lakeview.

Its proximity to the Music Box theater, as well as its accessibility via public transportation make Toons a great place to stop for lunch or to grab a drink after a long day of doing things far less entertaining.

About Gene Wagendorf III

Gene is a writer who has spent his entire quarter century of life as a resident of Chicago. When not exploring the city he can be found wandering flea markets and garage sales or having a cigarette between classes at Northeastern Illinois University, where he hopes to acquire a degree in the next quarter century. His favorite smells are old books and bowling alleys. His poetry (how embarrassing!) can be found in issues of Kill Poet, Ditch, Word Riot, O Sweet Flowery Roses and Vowel Movements.
