Sweetwater is definitely filling a void downtown. Sick of Potbellys, Corner Bakery, or other fast food joints? Sweetwater provides a welcome alternative to the norm in this former Bennigans spot. Good riddance Bennigans. The place is packed during the lunch hour as well as for after work cocktails and appetizers. Still, you probably won’t wait long as these young professionals are always on the go.

The menu doesn’t stray too far from standard grill fare — you’ve got burgers, wraps, salads, and sandwiches — but the added flourishes to traditional dishes is what counts. Try a fiesta burger with guacamole, tortilla strips, and chili aioli sauce; it is unsurprisingly messy, but provides a nice option if you want a burger with a little more excitement and some spice. The fish tacos were also really tasty and the salads are much better than your average lunch salad. And big too. The appetizer menu includes all of your standards and is perfect to please all your co-workers different tastes.

They also have a nice craft beer selection, which is pretty much a requirement these days. They also provide a gluten-free menu, which shows what on their menu is gluten-free without having to bug your server.

Service was attentive, but slightly slow when I went, which was a bit of a problem since one of us had a strict one hour lunch break. Still, even when our server was unavailable, bussers or what appeared to be a manager would help us get what we needed. The atmosphere includes comfortable booths, high tables, and a lot of black and cream decor. Very sleek, while remaining casual. They also have outdoor seating.

About Tessa McLean

There is just something about that feeling when you have been away — maybe for a weekend, a month, 6 months — and you’re driving into Chicago and that first glimpse of the city skyline appears. It just always makes me smile.
