Old Orchard Shopping Mall
Located in Skokie, just 17 miles from downtown Chicago, Westfield Old Orchard combines the allure of State Street and Magnificent Mile shopping in a quiet and confined space. As the mall is located in an upscale North Shore community, you’re not going to find a Sears, Target, or Kohl’s at this mall. With well over 70 stores, including higher-end mall staples such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, and Bloomingdale’s, there’s something for everyone looking to do some serious retail damage.
If there isn’t a sale going on, many of Old Orchard’s stores can be financially out of reach. Still, there are more reasonable and accessible stores such as American Eagle, Gap, and Aeropostle. Their massive Forever 21 carries every line the store offers, including its plus-size clothing line, Forever 21+ and its fairly new active wear. While the stores content may be worth a trip, be sure to bring some Advil — on the weekends this place is destined to give even the most patient shopper a massive headache.
Not a fan of shopping? Old Orchard offers some great chain grub spots including The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Maggiano’s, and many more. The mall also contains a Regal Garden’s Cinema, which features 13 screens playing the latest blockbuster releases.
For anyone unfamiliar with the shopping center, if you’ve seen the movie Mean Girls, the name may ring a bell. Remember that infamous cat-fighting scene near the indoor mall fountain? Yep, that’s what I thought. Unfortunately, if you’re expecting Old Orchard to resemble its depiction in the movie Mean Girls, you’ll be disappointed. Unlike in the movie, Old Orchard is not an indoor mall. It’s entirely outdoors with chic cobblestone sidewalks, lamppost signs that guide shoppers from one store’s location to the next, and a children’s play area.
While you can find the majority of shops and restaurants at Old Orchard along State Street or the Magnificent Mile, it’s still worth a trip. If for nothing else besides its spacious, FREE, parking lots and the fact that all of the mall’s restaurants and stores are located within a very leisurely and walkable distance.
