Oak Street Beachstro (Restaurant, Magnificent Mile)
Location: Oak Street Beach, 1001 N. Lake Shore Drive
Reservations: accepted for parties of 10 or more
Oak Street Beachstro is a lakefront oasis just steps from the downtown bustle of Michigan Avenue. Having worked here for several summers, I can attest to the fact that this place satisfies. As it’s name suggests, this full-service restaurant actually sits on Oak Street Beach, just feet from the lakefront bike path. Lined with real Florida palm trees and adorned with white Christmas lights, it’s certainly the only restaurant of its kind in Chicago. During the day the “Beachstro” is filled with bikini-wearing barefoot 20-somethings drinking daiquiris and munching on paninis. At night the Gold Coast crew rolls in to enjoy a bottle of wine and relaxing dinner. The food is all yummy, though I have to say the burgers are a personal favorite– oooh and the waffle fries.. mmm. Prices can be steep, but remember you’re paying for the view and the ambiance. They don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait up to an hour and a half on weekends at lunch or dinner time. To get to the restaurant, take the underpass at Oak Street & Michigan Ave. to the beach. *Only open May through September.
