I love Murphy’s Bleachers. And maybe it isn’t just the bar, maybe it’s that this place is associated in my mind with sunny summer days spent at the friendly confines. But I’m admitting that upfront. If you’re looking for a place to hang out before, after, or during a Cubs game, Murphy’s is where you want to be.

This place has been around since the 1930s, beginning as Ernie’s Bleachers. After two name changes and countless renovations, this place is still one of the best in Wrigleyville, notably because of its location directly across the street from the entrance to Wrigley Field’s bleacher section.

A nice mix between the old and the young, you’ll see twenty-somethings mix with visitors from bordering states mix with the older Chicago native Cubs generation that remembers each time we have screwed up a chance at the World Series. There’s nothing fancy here — most of what you drink is and should be out of the can. The bar has two sections of outdoor seating where most fans like to congregate on a particularly nice Chicago summer day. And if the Cubbies are playing, you can guarantee this place will be crowded.

Can’t wait for some ballpark food? That’s pretty much all they serve at Murphy’s. Head to their food stand for hot dogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches or a brat. The only thing I have to complain about at Murphy’s is the bathrooms. But I complain about pretty much everywhere in Wrigleyville’s bathrooms. Gross.

About Tessa McLean

There is just something about that feeling when you have been away — maybe for a weekend, a month, 6 months — and you’re driving into Chicago and that first glimpse of the city skyline appears. It just always makes me smile.
