Men’s Spas and the Art of Manscaping

I found it humorous when my dad started growing a “recession beard” claiming he wouldn’t shave until the economy improved. And it was a good time when some guy friends grew facial hair to support the Chicago Blackhawks during their fight for the Stanley Cup. But with all joking and Stanley Cup superstitions aside, the men of Chicago are pretty well groomed. And the women of Chicago can thank an uprising trend of men’s spas for their skillful manscaping. With plush leather chairs, tranquil yet masculine environments, plasma TVs, and beautiful women attending to their relaxation needs men finally have what their counterparts have had all along… maybe even a little bit more.

Swing into Club 316 Barber Spa and you’ll be feeling like Vince Vaughn… “Vegas, Baby. Vegas.” Throw around some poker chips or challenge a buddy to a game of pool while waiting for a spa experience to begin. A suitable package on the menu is the Player, which includes a massaging shampoo, hair cut/style, hand detail (during haircut) and a shoe shine to boot! The Player will leave you feeling like a million bucks. Then relax in front of the fireplace while sipping on a complementary beer, wine, tea or coffee. Unique to Club 316 Barber Spa is the Capo package, a custom series of treatments hand-picked by you for your wedding day. So grab a few of your favorite groomsmen to get groomed before the big day — you can’t go wrong with private use of the 316 Club and catered food and drinks! Club 316 brings fun to the financial district.

If the Vegas lifestyle is too rich for your taste, head over to one of the many Halo for Men, an upscale barber shop with a modest yet gratifying environment designed for the urban/city-dwelling male. Although The Man is their signature hair cut and style service, why not put down your multimedia device for a moment, relax your mind, escape technology and get a $1 per minute chair massage and/or hand & forearm massage designed so you can finally put down the crackberry. Or sit back and order a drink, the service that is. The Drink is a replenishing deep-moisturizing seaweed mask that soothes and protects dry skin. Check out their menu for a full list of services and descriptions. Halo for Men is located in seven different Chicago neighborhoods making it a little more convenient to indulge.

If you respond to Lord, Monsieur, or Sir, you might find yourself quite comfortable at Sir Spa, a full-service day spa. Translation: they offer everything from hand and foot grooming, facials and waxing to massages. After channeling your inner calm in the relaxation room, head to the state of the art locker room. A personal locker, plush robe and matching slippers await you. A perfect summertime treatment is the Sir Scrub, which exfoliates and then hydrates your skin. Salts from the Dead Sea and your selection of essential oils are massaged into your body ridding you of dry skin and reinvigorating your body. Step into the therapeutic rain shower and finish with hydrating lotion. And if you’ve been hitting the gym trying to get that beach body into shape, the Ab Wrap might also be for you. Complementing your hard work is a specialty concentrate that breaks up and releases lipids and toxins in the abdomen region, leaving your stomach feeling firm and tightened. Back in the locker room unwind further in the steam room and try designer lotions and toiletries.

Whether you’re a card shark, a mans man, or a man with a title, Chicago has you covered when it comes to manscaping. With masculine decor and over the top amenities including everything from free wifi to a pool table male, salons may just “sir pass” women’s when it comes to comfort and pleasure. Don’t worry you won’t be teased if you fall victim to this trend of men’s spas, instead you’ll feel revived and refreshed. And since we’re not seeing too much improvement in the stock market, my dad gave up on his “recession beard,” but boys way to go, whether your superstitions helped or not Lord Stanley is where he belongs right here in Chicago.

About Natalie Scheid

When Mattel manufactures your idol and your nickname is Barbie life can get pretty unreal. My favorite activities include cheering on the White Sox (I’ve been converting Cubs fans since 1986), meeting new people and writing on the rooftop with the skyline as my backdrop. You might be able to find me at the opening of a new hot spot, soaking up some culture at a local museum or art show, or enjoying one of the cities fabulous festivals. So…. catch me if you can!
