Lula Cafe is a Logan Square neighborhood spot that’s not your typical hole-in-the-wall. An eclectic “new American” menu offers interesting tastes, and keeps people coming back from all over town.

Each table starts the meal with an Amuse-Bouche, a small bite to get the palate going. That night the welcome treat was a bite of squash and apple with a Riesling gillet. The fall flavors were perfect, and it ended up tasting like a little burst of apple pie.

The menu is reprinted daily with a slew of specials, but the mainstays seem to be just as intriguing. Appetizers include simple salads, soups, and small plates like a Marinated Beet Bruschetta or Steak Tartare. We chose to split a Baked Feta, which was topped with pickled onions and cucumbers… delicious! Also to start, we tried the Caesar Salad — light and simple, but not exactly your traditional caesar — and the creamy Celery Soup which was on special. Yum.

Entrees range from a Chicken Torta sandwich on Ciabatta bread to a mildly spicy Spaghetti to a Whole Roasted Rushing Waters Trout. Appetizers can also be had as entrees, as they aren’t too tiny — like the Mushroom & Chèvre Quesadilla, which was crispier than your average quesadilla but still great.

As if the food wasn’t amazing enough, the drink list is exceptional. Try the Sangria del Durazno (a tequila white sangria with peach flavors) or the Sour Fizz (a blackberry rum cocktail). The craft beer list is short, but satisfying.

As for the decor, well, let’s just say the food and drink are the main attractions. The small dining room has minimal decoration, but that’s just fine. The lighting is perfect, and if you snag a spot by curtain-draped windows it’s sure to be a romantic evening. The staff was unobtrusive yet friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. Just don’t expect to get out of there unscathed when it comes to your wallet — the place isn’t cheap. But for what you get, it’s moderate and certainly worth it!

Lula also serves a popular brunch, as well as Monday Night Farm Dinners. Check out the website for more info.
