La Creperie is an UPchicago personal favorite. Ok, really just Jackie’s absolute #1 restaurant in Chicago, if we’re being honest here. This family business was opened over 30 years ago by a French immigrant, Germain, and his American wife, Sara. It was recently taken over by their son, Jeremy, but maintains the same friendliness and charm. The small (10′x10′) kitchen dishes out some of the most authentic crepes to be found in the city, including everything from chicken & mushroom or broccoli & cheese dinner crepes, to an unbeatable dessert crepe known as the Banana Sara. The French Onion Soup here is also to die for. With two small dining rooms and a lovely backyard patio, the space is warm, inviting, and quaint. Walls are adorned with wooden panels once used in the Drake hotel and old maps of France, and on Thursday nights Germain serenades guests with his trumpet. Make sure to come here with an appetite, an elastic waistband, and plenty of time to enjoy night of authentic French dining.
