This cafe/restaurant is a gem of a spot in a city scattered with Starbucks. If you’re the type who enjoys slowly sipping a great cup of tea or a cappuccino while reading the paper uninterrupted, this is the place for you.

Coffee is served on a silver tray with a small ginger cookie and a glass of water. If you’re a tea aficionado, it may take you awhile to sift through the four page list of teas! The best thing about it all? There’s an atmosphere of “sit down and stay a while.” Step into Julius Meinl, and gone are the days of a rushed latte to-go before catching the L. Of course, there is a carry-out counter, but if you have the time why would you not slink into one of the cozy big chairs and cuddle up with a warm mug?

For those who are hungry, Julius Meinl will not disappoint. The sandwiches are fabulous — even those as simple as a turkey and avocado club. Served with fresh ingredients and a small side salad, lunch here won’t make you regretful. Well, that is unless you go for their fabulous nutella crepes, or a bowl of the Austrian Mac & Cheese! Still, these treats are perfectly executed and come in small enough portions you won’t be feeling bad about your lunch.

The decor, atmosphere and service all have a decidedly European coffeehouse feel to them, which is what makes the place such a leisurely spot to enjoy a sandwich and a cup of tea.

There are two locations: one in the Southport Corridor area of Lakeview/Wrigleyville, and one in North Center.
