This Ernest Hemingway inspired gastropub encourages you to step back in time. Take the best of the old and the very best of the new and you’ve got Hubbard Inn. Dark wood and exposed beams are offset by framed pictures lining the walls. One long table in the center as you walk in encourages communal dining — with candelabras, of course. A bar lines the west side of the River North lounge, complete with busy bartenders making craft cocktails. A huge chalkboard hangs above the bar announcing the evenings offerings. Once you’ve grabbed a seat, take a look at the elaborate menu if you want to indulge in dinner, or simply order your favorite cocktail.

The owners knew you wanted to catch up on your literary classics while you visited Hubbard Inn, so there is a library in back, usually with an old school movie playing on TV. Head to the upstairs lounge to the real hotspot on weekend evenings complete with more bookcases and vintage couches. All service I’ve experienced has been friendly and knowledgeable, which can help when trying to decide on a cocktail. They also have a great selection of craft beer. Hubbard Inn is usually very loud and can certainly be a place to see and be seen, so keep that in mind when planning your outfit for the evening. This spot fits in well along a row that includes Epic, Hub 51, and Paris Club among others.

About Tessa McLean

There is just something about that feeling when you have been away — maybe for a weekend, a month, 6 months — and you’re driving into Chicago and that first glimpse of the city skyline appears. It just always makes me smile.
