Gold Star (Bar, Wicker Park)

Location: 1755 W. Division St., Wicker Park
Phone: 773.227.8700

Gold Star Bar is one of the last vestiges of old Wicker Park, a cash only ironic hipster den that kept their ambitions simple; cheap beer and good music. This is one of the only bars that has more space for the bartender to move around then the actual patrons. Its décor is purposefully understated and its seating limited to a few scattered tables, which makes sense when this place becomes slammed. Frills include free popcorn, a decent pool table and a popular jukebox stocked with punk, ska and various crowd pleasers. The patrons are often the best part of this establishment, somehow always inspired to mix it up and compete for the biggest freak award. As long as there’s Gold Star then no one shall forget Wicker Park for what it once was and still strives to be.

About David Frankel McLean

I’ve been thinking philosophically about Chicago since I was jaywalking the streets at the age of 10. I don’t root for both baseball teams and I don’t put Ketchup on my hot dogs. When someone says they’re a Chicagoan they are speaking of a heritage and a doctrine, not just a location. What that doctrine is I’m not entirely sure, it’s constantly changing with the growth of the city and I’ll spend my entire life trying to figure it out.
