Downtown Theater District

Loop theater district downtown chicago

Chicago is home to some of the best performance arts venues in the country, and much like New York City, has a district that has long since housed some of the best theaters — and talent — in town. It’s no Times Square, but the city’s Downtown Theater District is a hub of artistic talent and the closest you can get to Broadway without setting foot on a plane.

Billboards and marquee lights shine and sparkle up and down Dearborn, Randolph and State in Chicago’s Loop, where theater-lovers flock to get their taste of Broadway. Productions that have seen the stage in this district over the years include “Les Miserables”, “Stomp”, “Wicked”, “The Lion King”, “Jersey Boys”, “Cats”, “Kiss Me Kate” and many other Tony Award-winning shows.

In the summer of 2000, the creation of Broadway in Chicago fused together two of the largest theater producers and operators in the U.S., Live Nation Theatrical and the Nederlander Organization. Broadway in Chicago currently operates five venues in the Theater District, including the Cadillac Palace Theater, The Bank of America Theater, Broadway Playhouse, the Auditorium Theater at Columbia College, and the Ford Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Oriental Theater). In 2007 the company shifted from a joint venture to solely a Nederlander operation, but continues to keep the Downtown Theater District energetic and profitable by bringing high-quality productions to its stages. And conveniently for theater-goers, Broadway in Chicago is a simple one-stop shop for tickets to shows at any of these five venues.
