This Rogers Park hole-in-the-wall really only has one thing for sale: bourek. Bourek is a savory stuffed pastry that is the ubiquitous staple of cuisine in the Balkan countries, with regional styles varying to a relatively large degree. The style on display at Deta’s Cafe is distinctly Montenegrin. Imagine a large paper plate-sized pinwheel of a pastry, basically one long tube of phylo-like dough stuffed with meat or cheese or spinach or on special occasions cabbage (oh the cabbage!) that is wrapped around itself in a spiral pattern. It is easy to see why devotees pack the tiny space of Deta’s Cafe for these salty and delicious butter bomb delights. Deta is a sweet lady whose restaurant kitchen is so small and homey (and basically unseperated from the dining area) that you feel like she’s invited you into her home. And what a lucky feeling that is.

About Max Wolod

I’m a Chicago lifer. I studied Creative Writing at Tulane University in New Orleans but my prodigal ass returned to Rogers Park a year ago and for keeps. If I had a tattoo it would be a phantasmagorical BearBullHawk riding the Sears Tower a la Dr. Strangelove. My pastimes include eating and drinking to excess and lamenting another woeful year for the (INSERT CHICAGO SPORTS TEAM). I represent Rogers Park and the Tao of Ditka. Amen.
