DeColores (Restaurant, Pilsen, BYOB)
Location: 1626 S. Halsted
Reservations: accepted for parties of 6 or more
I think I’m in love. DeColores is a fairly new BYOB restaurant East Pilsen spot serving up some of the best Mexican fare I’ve had in the city. Just blocks away from UIC University Village, this small restaurant attracts an interesting array of clientele. An older local crowd shuffles in for lunch and dinner on weekdays, but when the weekend rolls around the place fills up with a younger energy. DeColores has only been open since November 2009, but they have already developed a relationship with their Pilsen neighbors, and plan to stick around for a while.
Their steak fajitas are phenomenal, as is the guacamole, which is likely the freshest I’ve ever tasted. The specialty is their mole sauce, which comes on several dishes including a hearty Mole Poblano. They don’t serve any alcohol, but if you bring your own tequila they’ll gladly use their margarita mixes and blender to whip you up a cocktail to go with your meal.
Service is friendly, and with less than 30 tables in the restaurant you can still have an intimate dining experience. The space doubles as a gallery with local artists’ work hanging on the walls and creating a funky atmosphere. The art is available for purchase, and the restaurant participates in the Pilsen Second Friday of the month open galleries. If you’re looking for a new Mexican place to try out, this is a great option and won’t break the bank.
