Chicago Street Festivals: September 2011

Here we continue with this series of articles in which we include a month-by-month guide of what’s up at this summer’s street festivals. September already? Why does the summer always fly by so fast? Let’s pretend it hasn’t ended and enjoy the last of the street festivals.

North Coast Music Festival
When: September 2-4
Where: Union Park, West Loop.
Price: for tickets
Basic Info: David Guetta, Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation, Fat Boy Slim, Gogol Bordello, Of Montreal, Little Dragon, STS9, and more rocking’ the West Loop.

African Festival of the Arts
When: September 2-5
Where: Washington Park.
Price: $5-10
Basic Info: A celebration of the African culture’s influence on America including live performance, international food and drink, and a market.

Taste of Polonia
When: September 2-5
Where: Jefferson Park.
Price: $7
Basic Info: Mmm pierogis, sauerkraut, polish sausage, oh my! Combine all that with some polka bands (and ok, some American bands too) and you’ve got a guaranteed good time. Arts and crafts, kids activities, and a Sunday Mass are on schedule as well.

Bash on Wabash
When: September 17-18
Where:Wabash and 13th Street, South Loop.
Price: $5
Basic Info: Local restaurants provide food and drink while live music plays from multiple stages by DJs and local bands. Arts and crafts, kids activities will also be present.

Chicago Jazz Festival
When: September 1-4
Where: Location varies by day, Sept 1,2 – Millennium Park; Sept 3,4 – Grant Park
Price: Free
Basic Info: Local, national, and international jazz musicians dazzle Chicago.

Festival de La Villita
When: September 9-11
Where: Kostner and 26th Street, Pilsen.
Price: Free
Basic Info: Pilsen’s celebration of Mexican heritage and independence from Spain with live music, food vendors, and arts and crafts.

German American Festival
When: September 9-11
Where: 4700 N. Lincoln, Lincoln Square.
Price: Free
Basic Info: All the German food you could want, folk music, and the 45th Annual Von Steuben Day Parade.

Windy City Wine Festival
When: September 9-10
Where: Buckingham Fountain
Price: $25+
Basic Info: This ones for the winos. Sample hundreds of international wines while enjoying live music. Wine seminars and cooking demonstrations also on site.

79th Street Renaissance Fest
When: September 10
Where: 79th Street and Racine, Englewood.
Price: Free
Basic Info: Food vendors, a market, live music, and kids activities.

Renegade Craft Fair
When: September 10-11
Where: Damen and Division, Ukrainian Village.
Price: Free
Basic Info: Local, national, and international artists display different types of art as well as wares to sell at this fest. Live music and food vendors are also on site.

Ukrainian Village Fest
When: September 10-11
Where: Saints Volodymyr Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church
Price: $5 donation
Basic Info: Not far from the Renegade Craft Fair, Ukrainian food, music, and dance will be present at the neighborhood fest. Your donation benefits the church, which also hosts a raffle.

Wells Street Fall Fest
When: September 10-11
Where: Wells and North Avenue, Old Town.
Price: $6 donation
Basic Info: Art displays, food and drink vendors, and live music.

Berghoff Oktoberfest
When: September 14-16
Where: Federal Plaza Square, the Loop.
Price: Free
Basic Info: The typical German celebration.

Guinness Oyster Fest
When: September 16-17
Where: Damen and Roscoe, Roscoe Village.
Price: $5 donation
Basic Info: Fresh oysters and Guinness that won’t stop flowing. Need I say more?

Oktoberfest Chicago
When: September 23-25
Where: Lincoln and Southport Avenue, Lakeview.
Price: $5 donation
Basic Info: Proceeds go to St. Alphonsus that celebrates their German heritage with their imitation of traditional Oktoberfest. Bratwurst and beer, yum.

Rib-a-Que Smoke-out
When: September 24
Where: Moonshine Brewing Company, Ukrainian Village.
Price: Visit for details on tickets.
Basic Info: Chefs compete to be Smoke Out champion. Ticket holders can visit their booths for food and drink. Who will be this year’s winner?

Chicago Gourmet
When: September 23-25
Where: Millenium Park
Price: Pricey alert! Check out for details.
Basic Info: The city’s hottest chefs do cooking demonstrations and some of the best wines are provided by city sommeliers. A foodie’s dream.

Randolph Street Market Festival
When: September 24-25
Where: 1350 W. Randolph, West Loop.
Price: $10, $5 for students.
Basic Info: This is a more serious festival, more for the buying crowd and less for the drinking, eating, and listening crowd. This indoor/outdoor market features antiques, indie designer apparel, fancy foods, and vintage collectibles.
