Neighborhood Overview

The UIC/Tri-Taylor area is located on the southwest side of the city, just north of the West Loop. It has historically been home to a unique mix of residents, situated between largely Hispanic, Italian and Greek neighborhoods. That still holds true these days, with a bunch of young smart kinds throw into the mix.

Several blocks of this neighborhood make up Chicago’s Little Italy, which was the settling place for thousands of Italian immigrants years ago, and remains the city’s hub for Italian culture. Parts of the area have been named a Chicago landmark in order to protect the charming culture that pervades the neighborhood. Along with lovely limestone walk-ups, there are several Italian restaurants that have staked their claim in Chicago history, including Rosebud and Francesca’s.

The area is also home to two excellent institutes: The University of Illinois at Chicago, and Saint Ignatius College Prep. (Ok, we may be a bit biased on the latter… that’s the high school Tessa and I attended…) Thanks to these two schools, the area teems with young energy and cafes and restaurants catering to the crowd.

Oh, and just a reminder: once you’ve entered UIC/Tri-Taylor, you’ve stepped into White Sox territory. Lose the red and blue, ok?
