Neighborhood Overview

Beverly and Mount Greenwood are two of Chicago’s most popular and wealthiest far South Side neighborhoods. The beautiful Longwood Drive is home to some of the cities most beautiful mansions perched on hillsides — in fact, the area was named a historic city landmark in 1981. The neighborhoods are also known for the infamous South Side St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the largest neighborhood parade of any type in the country. (Unfortunately, the Parade was canceled recently. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for a comeback, though.)

The neighborhood is special for a variety of reasons. Years ago, when the African-American population moved into the South Side, many residents moved to the North Side of the city in what is known as “White Flight.” In Beverly, however, this didn’t happen. The South Side white Irish population stayed, creating a diverse mix of residents in the area.

These days the far South Side has a sub-culture of its own. If you ask somewhere where they’re from, you’re not gonna get an intersection or a nearby landmark. Instead, districts are divided based on what parish you’re from — oh so very Irish Catholic. The five main parishes are St. Barnabas, Christ the King, St. Walter, St. Cajetan, and St. John Fisher.

Though much of the city has changed in the last fifty years, parts of Beverly remain untouched, giving a real community feel. Families have lived there for generations, sometimes even staying in the same house! Beverly and Mount Greenwood aren’t the trendiest neighborhoods of Chicago, but they’re a wonderful respite from downtown, a great place to grow up, and really embody the city’s affection for neighborhoods.
