Neighborhood Overview

The Gold Coast is quite similar to what its name implies — it lies along the downtown coast of Lake Michigan on the Near North side, and is home to some of the city’s wealthiest residents and most beautiful homes.

The neighborhood is largely residential, with tree-lined streets and well-groomed parks and sidewalks, making for a lovely place to stroll around. Stunning million-dollar mansions and luxury condos are commonplace in the Gold Coast. It’s no wonder that many local celebrities choose to take up residence in the area, or that the original Playboy Mansion found its place here.

Located just West of the residential area is the Gold Coast’s main hub of activity — Rush Street. Some of Chicago’s best restaurants have staked their claim here, including Gibson’s Steakhouse and The Rosebud. The area is also a popular nightlife destination, as it’s home to several bars and nightclubs, including a few late-night spots open til 5am on weekends. It’s worth making mention that the intersection around Rush/Division/State is infamously known as the “Viagra Triangle.” (No explanation needed.) But don’t avoid the area just because of its nickname. There are tons of great restaurants, bars, and cafes that are worth a visit.
