Neighborhood Overview

The West Loop and the neighboring River West are an interesting combo with modest high- and mid-rises situated among expensive condos along the river. Home to the United Center, Oprah’s Harpo Studios, Union Park, the historic Maxwell Street Market, and the fabulous Greektown, the area boasts an eclectic mix of activity.

The neighborhood is historically known as a blue-collar residential area, stemming from the nearby meatpacking district that thrived at the turn of the 20th century. However, the recent white-collar transplants have begun to create change in the area. Old meatpacking warehouses have become trendy art galleries, and shi-shi restaurants have sprung up under dark L tracks. The gentrification of the West Loop has been slow and organic, though, as opposed to some of its other west side counterparts. As one of the most authentic Chicago neighborhoods, the West Loop is certainly worth a visit.
