Butch McGuires (Bar, Gold Coast)

Opened in 1961 by the “unofficial mayor of Division Street”, this Chicago bar is a legendary establishment. Decorated with antiques and school pennants, the quirky yet classic bar is a favorite among locals, as well as a destination for people from all over the world. It’s one of those places your uncle might take you to on the day you turn 21 for your first legal pint. Christmastime at Butch McGuires is famous — an astonishing array of lights, mobiles, ornaments, and other decorations hang from the ceiling, surrounded by an antique moving double-decker toy train. Though it’s not a place to go if you’re in the mood to shake your ass, it definitely attracts a good-spirited crowd. The clientele ranges from 20-somethings downing IPAs to 65-year-olds sipping whiskey and reminiscing about when they used to hang around with Butch at the bar. Butch McGuires is a must-see whether you’re in Chicago for just a weekend, or have been living here your whole life. No matter who you walk in the door with, you’ll walk out with a whole new group of friends.
