Angels & Kings (Bar, Near North)
Location: 710 N. Clark
Fence with the guards, or rather, show the bouncers your ID, for admittance into this River North fortress known as Angels and Kings. The giant checkerboard floor might lead you right to a throne fit for a King or Queen while you await your goblet of __ (insert your drink choice here). Angels and Kings is co-owned by guyliner-wearing bad boy bassist Pete Wentz, and it earned its name from his two managers – Jonathan Daniel, a former Electric Angels band member and Bob Mclynn, an ex-Step Kings artist. “I don’t want to hang out in a usual bar. I want to hang out in an unusual bar,” says Wentz, with a crooked smile.
Angels and Kings is just that, boasting unusual features you won’t find in any other River North lounge. A feature Wentz himself loves is the four gold plated AK-47s hanging on the walls. Being the fashion lover I am, it wasn’t long until I realized these custom-made AK-47s were printed in Louie Vuitton and Gucci logos. AK-47 is also the nickname for Angels and Kings for those in the know. A ladder leads to the raised platform where the DJs spin, uninterrupted and a giant gong hangs in waiting behind the bar for those occasions when a hot shot buys the entire bar a round. But if you’re not so lucky, expect to pay retail prices for drinks. Black and white mug shots of Jimi Hendrix, Sid Vacious, Johnny Cash and Janice Joplin add another quirky feature to AK. Don’t forget to star as a famous icon in your own mug shots with a photo op in the front.
The best spot to view this rockin’ venue is from the VIP section. Towering above the first floor is a loft VIP section where you and your entourage are treated like royalty. Throw back shots like a rock n’ roll band member in the vein of Death From Above, Clark Street Sling, and Gun Clip. Even taking a break and visiting the facilities is entertaining – the restrooms are covered in graffiti, and you can create your own while waiting in line.
Your regal presence is the only thing missing from Angels and Kings. Come listen to a local band live or become part of the court. Get booked and use your last get-out-of-jail-free card then celebrate with a gong shot. This interactive bar is anything but usual and won’t be anything but a good time!
