Alice’s Lounge | Check out the website
3556 W Belmont Ave., Avondale
If you love karaoke as much as we do here at UPchicago and you haven’t yet been to Alice’s Lounge, you need to drop everything and take a trip to Avondale for one of the most kickass karaoke bars in the city. With a song list that will make other karaoke bars blush (and maybe even ditch their own bars for a round at Alice’s), this karaoke haven deservedly draws crowds itching to do the classics, heavy metal, or that indie hit you didn’t think anyone else had heard of yet, much less put on a karaoke song list.
Alice’s sits on a quiet corner right on Belmont, but as soon as you step inside the door, the high energy and loud music definitely keeps the party going. Alice’s hosts karaoke every night with their memorable DJ who will lend you props, sing along, and taunt the not-so-great singers (don’t worry, it’s all in good fun). They also offer special party packages for those who want full control over this enviable song list. Alice’s gets more and more crowded as the night goes on, drawing regulars, karaoke pros, and newbies alike, so get there early and put in your request, or you might be waiting until 3 a.m. before you can wow the crowd with your rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.
1659 W North Ave, Wicker Park
We’ve all had the fantasy of being a rockstar. But do you also dream of belting it out up close and personal with your audience, surrounded by groupies with the possibility of crowd-surfing? Head to this always loud, always crowded Wicker Park karaoke spot for your brush with rockstar-dom.
Offering karaoke seven nights a week, Louie’s Pub has a great, modern song selection and that go-all-night Wicker park attitude perfect for letting loose and belting out your favorite 90s rock anthem.
Tip the DJ well and pump yourself up for an energy-filled karaoke performance. Performers sing right in the midst of the crowded room, and the mic cords are long, so get your frontman or frontwoman strut on and sing your heart out. Because this spot gets crowded, this might be your only shot at karaoke fame all night, so make it count.
Lincoln Karaoke | Check out the website
5526 N Lincoln Ave, Lincoln Square
If you want to experience the best Korean-style, private-room karaoke in the city, Lincoln Karaoke is the place to go. With several private rooms featuring flat screen TVs and high-tech karaoke set-ups, Lincoln Karaoke knocks the other private-room karaoke bars out of the water. They are great for special events, such as birthdays, bachelorette and bachelor parties, so if your group of friends loves karaoke, this might be the perfect place for your next celebration.
We suggest you gather a large group of friends (six or more to get your money’s worth) and reserve a room beforehand to ensure you can rock out and party together all night long. Rates are hourly and vary depending on the size of your group and how late you want to stay (2 a.m. or 3 a.m.). The bar provides drink and food service (including scrumptious pizza) straight to the private room, so you and your group can focus solely on your favorite songs and cheering each other on.
Sidekick’s | Check out the website
4424 W Montrose Ave, Irving Park
Tucked into a sleepy part of Montrose Ave, Sidekick’s is a relaxed neighborhood bar where Karaoke superstars will find cheap drinks and delicious fried food, a stage, and karaoke seven nights a week. The bar is normally full of regulars for a reason: you can sing all the karaoke your heart desires. If you put in 9 requests to the DJ with a smile and a tip, you will get to sing all nine of those songs to a standing ovation and cheers each time.
Sidekick’s, which is usually less busy than the other karaoke bars on the list, is a great place to practice a new karaoke favorite with a supportive audience. And if you’re really a karaoke veteran, saunter up to the DJ and ask him about Karaoke Roulette. We dare you.
Blue Frog Bar & Grill | Check out the website
676 N LaSalle, River North
This River North Karaoke Bar (Tuesday-Saturday) will get you in the door with the promise of karaoke but will get you to stay all night long for the relaxed atmosphere, great, cheap pub food and 100s of board games—both classics and rarities.
We suggest you make a night of it. Get there early before Karaoke starts at 8pm for some dinner and drinks to calm the nerves and be first in line with a list of your favorite karaoke go-to’s when the DJ opens up the mic.
